October is National Fire Prevention and Safety Month.  We like think of our homes as a safe haven. However, it is really important to take some proactive steps in order to maintain fire safety on a daily basis.

We are including some helpful hints and reminders to help keep your home and family fire safe from fires:

1.Install smoke alarms on every  level of your home, and check the batteries monthly.

2. Unplug appliances when not in use.

3.  Make sure there is ample space (3 feet minimum) away from portable space heaters.

4. Position appliances carefully (ie: away from curtains and water sources).

5. Don't overload circuits or extension cords, as this could cause overheating.

6.  Install a sprinkler system; it may lower your insurance rates.

7.  Create an escape route and practice it with your family from every room in the house (Here at Bickford, we practice regular fire drills so that we are prepared in the event of a real fire.)

8. Be careful around the holidays, dispose of any  decorations with frayed cords.

9.Clean dryer vents after each use.

Stay safe and enjoy  a beautiful fall season!
