Mary B's have several different styles of hats to play with, touch and talk about, for example, a derby hat, pill hat, cowboy hat, a Mary Poppins hat to name a few. We had fun trying them on and talking about the days when wearing hats were the norm. In addition, we had hat trivia with our coffee time.

I made a double batch because these goodies are for the RACK'D community service project. After packaging these up they will go to the Urbandale Fire Department as a way of saying thank you for all they do for us here at Bickford.

Lots of fun this week decorating doors for Christmas. Snowmen and holiday lights adorns the doors of Mary B's. The residents cut out the circles and light bulb pieces while others assisted me in assembling them on the door. Please come by and take a look.

Mary B's has a cultural activity called "Travel to..." that we do monthly. This month it was travel to Mexico. Thanks to my Mexican background I was able to share my family's salsa recipe which is always a big hit with chips. I have lots of books of art, architecture, food and travel to look at. We also play Loteria which is Mexican bingo but instead of numbers there are pictures. And last, some Mexican Trivia is always interesting.

Small flags were placed outside, buntings hung on the porch and the flag was brought inside for the ceremony. All Bickford Veterans were recognized and given a red carnation. In addition, the wives of Veterans were also recognized for their perseverance. A reception followed the ceremony.

In Mary B's this week we tried our hand at almond crescent cookies. There are several almost identical recipes of this cookie in many cultures. I can think of Eastern European countries (Bosnia and Poland) and Mexico. In Mexico they are called wedding cookies. They turned out delicious but didn't "look" the way I remembered them. So I will make the recipe again with the Mary B's gang and hopefully will improve on the appearance.

An art project that we have done in the past we did again this week, but with a small change. It's called Q-Tip painting and the residents enjoy it and are good at it too. You take a Q-Tip and start making dots with the end. You'd be surprised how great an artist you can be using this technique. We changed it up a bit by grouping several Q-Tips with a rubber band and making clusters of dots. It turned out great.

One of the themes this week was Family History Day. We learned many interesting things about our residents. Sue has family members that have patents and LaVonne's father was a stowe-away on a boat from Italy to Ellis Island! I'm grateful to learn about the different backgrounds of our residents.

We had a BIG laugh when one of the "chick's rules" was "Wear at least an apron when baking." This spurred conversations, one liners and lots of giggling.

The following day Puppy Chow was cooked up with lots of fans of this great stuff although it's a bit on the messy side with all that powered sugar getting on everything. We finished the week with homemade strawberry jam. It's the quick cooking kind and it's delicious! The residents love it on their toast in the morning.

Glada is enjoying Draper, a pet therapy cat that comes to Bickford monthly. He weights 20 pounds! A handsome cat he is! He's very popular at Bickford. We also have a dog that comes to visit monthly.

This month's theme was "50's Day." This is always a lot of fun with 50's music played in the background most of the day, milk shakes and Coke. We had live music with Bill Connett and he played several Elvis tunes on his electric guitar (he also brought 2 other guitars). Our resident, George Archer, called on his son to bring out his 2 classic cars from this time period, a 1950 Ford and a 1952 Lincoln. Great photo op!!! They were beautiful and the residents enjoyed seeing these.
