Everyone is affected by the cold, Iowa weather that the winter season brings each year. However, for seniors, this time can present many winter challenges and hazards. With decreased sunlight or some may call "the winter blues" comes decreased energy and mood. It may sound easy to say, "Go get some fresh air!" or "open the curtain and let some sunlight come through!" but for those who are not able to leave the home or struggle to, such as seniors, that isn't very easy to do. Try to keep curtains and blinds open at all times to let some sunlight through. Seniors should avoid driving when road conditions are at their worst, and those who do drive should be prepared for the conditions. At Bickford, we can provide that transportation to and from doctors appointments by our bus or by our certified caregivers that have their chauffeur license. Whatever it takes to get your loved one to their destination safely!

When someone says "annual Meeting" they might imagine an uncomfortable room with charts and graphs, where attendees are slumped in their chair and un-engaged. But Bickford gives that term a whole new meaning! Because we treat everyone like family, we call our annual meeting, Family Reunion, and it is everything it is cracked up to be! Lots of fun, engaging activities, and of course we do throw in a little learning. Family Reunion is a time of fellowship and engagement, bringing the Bickford Family together for a time of renewal. One of the fun things we do at Family Reunion is celebrate those Bickford Family Members that go above and beyond at the Pearl Ceremony. I am pleased that in my division, this year we have a BFM up for 6 of the 7 categories! Congratulations to Macomb Kitchen Manager of the Year nominee, Shawn Carroll; Marion BFM of the Year nominee Mike Merchant; Burlington RNC of the Year nominee Teddie Rinehart; Iowa City/Marion CRD of the Year nominee Holly Blood; Cedar Falls Director of the Year nominee Natalie Feldman; and the entire team in Cedar Falls for their Branch of the Year nomination. Michelle and I had a lot of fun surprising them all with a "pearlposal" inviting them to the Pearl Ceremony held in February at Family Reunion. Congratulations to all nominees, you all are very deserving!

Whatever it takes! With Snowmaggedon 2018 in full force, your loved one is in good hands! Have no fear, our caregivers have done whatever it takes to drive, ski, or sled in to work. Caregivers across the Midwest prepared for the worst and came to work early, stayed over extra hours, shoveled snow, cooked breakfast, and most importantly kept the branch running smooth and residents safe and warm. We have an assistant director remain at her branch for 42 hours. 2 caregivers came in Sunday morning, and stayed through the day and night to ensure cares were provide. Caregivers have helped others with rides to work. One branch provided air mattresses, blankets and pillows for those stranded at work. Caregivers hitched rides with 4 wheel drives and snow plows. A branch without power moved all of their residents to the living room near the fireplace to stay warm. Doing whatever it takes, happily, for our residents. Stay warm and safe, your loved one is.
