With a new year starting it is always a time to reflect on the previous year. I am so grateful to be a part of such an amazing team of compassionate individuals and the spunkiest, fun-loving group of residents. Our focus continues to be enriching the happiness of you and your loved ones. We feel that we can create happiness by meeting unrecognized needs of our residents. These are the needs our residents don't know to ask for but moments that we can create for them to create a bond, a purpose, or just simply bring a smile to their faces. I want to share a few unrecognized needs stories with you from 2017. One of our Bickford Family Members asked a family for permission to take their loved one to their home to back for an afternoon knowing that the resident enjoyed baking but could no longer safely bake on her own. Our resident enjoyed telling all of her friends about her day. Another BFM got permission to take a resident to an Iowa Cubs baseball game knowing his love for the game. They had the best day together. We have another resident that devoted many years of his life to Iowa State University. The residents took a bus tour through campus and our resident beamed with pride as he told the bus of his years spent at Iowa State working with students. These stories are the reason I love what I do! I could go on for days with stories of ways that all of the Bickford Family Members have brought the spark back to our residents’ lives and in return, how our residents have given all of us purpose. We measure our success by doing Happiness Checks month. Any family member that would like to participate receives a text message on the first of every month simply asking for your happiness with us, here at Bickford from 1-5. We, of course strive for fives from all of our contacts and because, of this love to hear your feedback on how we can make each one of you EXTREMLY HAPPY with Bickford. We love checking our scores every month as they continue to climb and we appreciate the comments. All of us here at Bickford are so excited to see what 2018 has in store for us! We look forward to making new memories and enjoying new experiences along the way. And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. ~Abraham Lincoln

It is hard to believe that we are now looking at 2017 in the rear view mirror. December was a fun month for us. Charlene and Susan played piano for us. Listening to the two women play piano was a delight! During the months of November and December, we baked cookies and made other goodies that reminded us of what our kitchens smelled like growing up and when we were baking with our children and grandchildren. We are always surprised at the Super Senior Magic Show and how talented Jonathan is (we are always trying to figure out his magic tricks).

We tried a new Minute to Win It game today. We used turkey basters to "blow" pom poms from the start line to the finish line. After everyone had a chance to play, we decided that it took a lot of work to get the pom pom to the finish line. We had a busy day today. We took all of the fall decorations down and put them away. Next week, we will begin putting up Christmas decorations. Everyone was amazed that Christmas is just around the corner.

Sometimes...you just need to find a reason to eat Oreo cookies! We decided to have a taste test between the vanilla and chocolate Birthday Cake Oreo cookies. After tasting both cookies, the winner of the best cookie....it was a tie! Both cookies were delicious. The only thing missing was a bowl of ice cream. Tom though the ice cream was a great idea, he was ready for 10 cookies with a bowl of ice cream. He has such a great sense of humor.
