Everyone's got a song and a story to share! There's something really great going on here at Bickford of Peoria. We've found the perfect medium to share our stories with each other. It all started with The Bickford Press, a monthly newsletter published "by and for the residents". Editor, Roy Pollock, is open to any and all submission. However, we've discovered that some stories really need more than a couple of columns to do them justice! Thus, folks are compiling their stories, passing them out to everyone, and then meeting for discussion. The first story is about the area mining history, written by Gladys Phileschefsky. A multi-media presentation is in the works!

I've been witness to a few highly competitive games of Uno during their last few visits, so the more 'laid back' among us may want to stick to Monopoly or Clue. This is a great time to teach a new generation games like Rook and Canasta and the Scouts may just demonstrate the finer points of new computer games like Minecraft!

So, when we were boarding the Bickford bus and settling in for an hour long journey, I was hoping the experience would live up to the expectation--and that the predicted rain would hold off! Wow! It turned out to be a fantastic day! Two museums, stories shared, a great lunch, a beautiful, sunny day, and meeting brand new friends! A perfect trip.

I recently came across an article called "How Do You Want to Live?" Specifically, it was focused on how in retirement, we lose the daily camaraderie of the workplace - which can contribute to isolation and loneliness if we don't find other ways to connect with people. Activities at Bickford of Peoria are more than something to do. Through their LifeSongs and our Resident Council, our resident's are an active part of creating new ways for all of us to contribute, to grow, to stay connected and maintain purpose as we age.

Northwestern University is pairing doctors-to-be with dementia patients in order to offer students a unique perspective on a disease they're likely to encounter during their careers. 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia - a number that could triple by 2050. This program is erasing the stigma of Alzheimer's, giving patients a sense of purpose and chances to engage socially, as well as training a new generation of doctors to find new treatments.

The April 2014 Family Circle magazine arrived in the mail yesterday and inside was an article on pages 90-92 called "Senior Moments" by Gina Roberts-Grey that addressed how to handle difficult situations with aging loved ones. I was particularly pleased that she stressed treating family members with dignity, keeping calm and clever in the face of any challenge, and avoiding burnout. These are all values that we hold dear here at Bickford. Feel free to contact Lynette Steger at: 309.689.5400 with any care questions you may have.

Congratulations to Bickford of Peoria for placing in the top quartile of Bickford’s annual Enriching Happiness Survey! The Enriching Happiness Survey was created to give our Friends of the Family a chance to tell us what they like and what we need to improve on. After each survey, we transform ourselves by working with our families to create an agenda to improve targeted areas together. Bickford focuses on "Top Box" scores to differentiate between happiness and satisfaction. On a typical 5-point satisfaction scale, this means calculating the percentage of those who say they're highly satisfied (5's) instead of showing the overall average score. We compare ourselves to the high standard of Top Box scores, so that we know that we have more than satisfied residents – we have residents whose happiness has been enriched. Congrats to Bickford of Peoria for enriching our residents happiness!

After our dementia support meeting this month (where many of us wondered aloud about our predisposition to Alzheimer's given our family histories), I came across an article by WSJ writer Matthew Hutson that used a quote by technologist Emerson Pugh: "If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn't." It is important to be reminded that DNA isn't destiny. Almost no traits are the expression of a single gene. Memories are rerecorded each time they're called up - so the self is what you make it.
