Bickford hopes you all had a wonderful Mother's Day! At Bickford on Hickory street we had a wonderful Mother's Day celebration. Friday we had the spectacular Wayne Miller perform for us, with special Mothers Day treats, including a pie social. Yesterday all of the women received carnations in honor of Mother's Day. They also got some pampering -- cookies and manicures. Thank you to all mothers! "Motherhood, all love begins and ends there." -- Robert Browning.

Data from the 2011 End of Life Survey Report conducted by the Nebraska Hospice and Palliative Care Association indicates that although it is important to many survey participants that they play an active role in making end-of-life decisions and plans, less than half have actually taken the step to engage in the planning and decision making process.
* 95% think completing a will is important
44% have done so
* 74% believe in pre-planning their funeral
13% have done so
* 90% have heard of a health care power of attorney
32% have completed the document
* 96% have heard of a living will
33% have completed one
These are just a handful of topics that can be discussed when making end-of-life plans. Many people have difficulty defining what they want at the "end of life," an alternitive way to view this conversation is to talk about goals of care. Since we know that personal goals change over time based upon many factors, this conversation will need to happen more than once.
Bickford offers many professionals who can assist you and your family with your conversations about goals of care. Visit with our RNC, Director, Community Relations Director or MarketPlace Ministry Chaplains. We can also refer you to other community resources who may be able to support you during your ongoing conversations. While it can be difficult to have conversations about your loved one's goals of care and end-of-life decisions, having these conversations will allow you to make decisions in the future with confidence that you are honoring your loved one's wishes.

And, when taking a bite into one of those millions of chocolate bunnies, 76% of Americans prefer to bite off the ears first, while 5% eat the feet first and 4% eat the tail first. Happy Friday! Yesterday was Casino Day at Bickford on Hickory and the residents had so much fun. Abby, the Activities Director, incorporated the casino theme into their daily routine and definitely made it an exciting day. The residents were able to win so many different prizes! Their favorite part of the day was when Abby held a Casino-like Bingo in the afternoon. She even wore a card dealer outfit to compliment the occasion. This afternoon Wayne Miller is coming to the branch to perfom. He is a great entertainer and his music is loved by all of the residents. Have a great weekend!

Hello from Bickford on Hickory street! I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day. Our Valentine's Day Party yesterday was a blast, and I know our residents would agree. It included music, food and drinks, and Valentine's Day games. Who can't help but love the spirit of Valentine's Day? It is important to remember that we all have someone who loves us dearly. Don't forget to show it right back! Attached is a favorite recipe we love at Bickford: Chocolate Covered Strawberries. Ingredients: 16 ounces chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons shortening, 1 pound fresh strawberries. Toothpicks will also be needed.
In a double boiler, melt chocolate and shortening, stirring occasionally until smooth. Insert toothpicks into strawberries, dip into chocolate mixture, then cool on wax paper. White chocolate may be drizzled over the milk chocolate. Enjoy!
