Scholarship Recipient One of the many great opportunities Bickford provides for their Bickford Family members is the opportunity to advance their education through financial assistance. Bickford offers 2 scholarships each year. The Bickford scholarship is for current Bickford Family Members who are interested in furthering their education. The Eby Scholarship is for the children of Bickford Family Members who are pursuing higher education. I was lucky enough to not only present both scholarships to 2 very deserving students in my division, but the Eby scholarship was extra special as it went to my daughter this year! Riley is going to be a sophomore at the University of Iowa, majoring in nursing. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Sorority, and has been accepted into the honors program. Congratulations Riley! Pictured is Riley (left) receiving her scholarship certificate from Divisional Director of Resident Services for Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois, Michelle Adam.

Our ladies colored Easter eggs in very different style this year. These eggs were colored with shaving cream and food coloring. Spread shaving cream on the bottom of the pan and add drops of good coloring and roll the hard boiled egg in the dye and shaving cream. Let the egg set for 20 minutes and wipe off. This was very unique and gives the eggs a tie dye look. The process is less messy and clean up is easy. Great job ladies!!

A Toy Story We often see, and encourage, grand kids and great grand kids, (heck, all kids!) to visit our branches and make themselves at home. I was at my Macomb Branch a while back, and as I was walking out, a resident, her husband, and their children were sitting on the front porch. They were taking much delight in watching their grand kids color beautiful pictures on the sidewalk using chalk. They told me how they loved to watch little kids play. It reminded me of when I went to my own grandparents home. My siblings and cousins and I would drag out a big box of toys that my grandma kept for us. She would love to watch us from the kitchen or sit outside and enjoy our play. I wanted to recreate that same feeling for our residents. Soon, you will find a basket similar to the one pictured at each of my locations on the front porch or the courtyard. The grand baskets are filled with fun outdoor activities to not only entertain our little visitors, but to provide a bridge between generations. After all, we are all kids at heart. <3 Beth

On the Road Again! That's the song that repeatedly ran through my mind the last 2 weeks of May as I traveled each day to one of my 10 branches to attend our Family Council Meetings. I felt like a politician on the campaign trail as I zipped from one location to the next, often criss-crossing across Iowa and Illinois. Although it made for some late evenings, I truly enjoyed coming into the branches at a different time than normal, visiting with caregivers and families that I don't always see when I am there during the morning/early afternoon times. For those that attended, thank you for taking the time to meet with us, and learn about the HappYness Survey, and our exciting plans to make our branches even better! For those that were unable to attend, I hope to see you at the next council, which is in August. Please feel free to stop in your local director's office any time if we can do something to help make your experience the best it can be while at Bickford. Until then, happy trails!

Fruit Infused Water-Its not just another pretty face! You have probably noticed around the branch the nice beverage areas, or what we like to call "hydration stations" set up near the living room. These are not only appealing to the eye, but have numerous health benefits as well! You might find anything from kiwi to lemons to cranberries floating in the inviting ice cold water to wet your whistle. The fruit infused water encourages everyone to drink more water which aids in hydration, digestion, and joint pain. So next time you are in, stop and pour yourself a refreshing glass of our jazzed up water, and encourage others to have a sip too. Spring is Springing! Be sure to be watching your local Bickford's activity calendar for upcoming spring sprucing and planting. We have all been working really hard to make our front porches and courtyards really inviting with furniture, decorations, and of course, flowers that will come soon. If you have a green thumb, or would like to roll up your sleeves and help out, we can always use and extra hand with weed pulling, planting, watering, or just sweeping the front porch. Flowers, along with Sheppard's hooks, baskets, yard ornaments, and feeders always make not only a great gift for hard to buy for loved ones, but also is a beautiful way to spruce up the view of not only the recipient but for all those that enjoy the outdoors. We look forward to having you join us for a little work and a lot of fun!

Howdy cowboys and cowgirls! What a fun day yesterday as we brought the wild, wild West to Bickford for Western Day! We rustled up some grub, roped a few ponies, and had ourselves a good ol' fashioned cow poke! I had a hard time deciding which branch to go to, but chose Bickford of Macomb. Partner, I was not disappointed! Macomb Director Lisa Kugler and her husband Jeff, not only hauled in saddles and authentic decorations, they also trailered in three of their horses for the residents to pet and love on. They even talked me into saddling up and riding off into the sunset on Black. Well, maybe not into the sunset, but I did ride him around the yard. Everyone did a fantastic job coming up with ideas and activities that brought many equestrian memories back to life for our residents. The kitchens were transformed into chuck wagons, and there was not an empty belly for miles around. I am looking forward to the next adventure! Happy Trails, Beth
