Wednesday of this week was "Country Fair Day" so we decided to have a pie baking contest. We ended up with four pies to taste. The top pie was an Old Fashioned Cream Pie from a vintage cook book. The residents made this one and it was really a hit! Second Place was a chocolate pie brought in by Christina. My top pick was a blueberry pie with fresh strawberry garnish baked by our chef. In the afternoon we watched the musical "State Fair", written by Rogers & Hammerstein. It was a hit also! Mom wanted the top prize in the the pie-baking contest and dad wanted a blue ribbon for his pet pig.

Many of the residents like to bake so we made 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies on Saturday. They also like to eat cookies, so they enjoy the fruits of their labor. We have a morning routine that we usually follow. We start out with chair exercise to music (we like Kenny G), which consists of gently stretching almost all parts of our bodies. Then we read the menu for the day. It also has "Today In History" on it. We check the weather and read some articles in the daily paper. By then, we have cooled down and we play catch with the beach ball or a balloon. On Saturday we watched the Cubs game and fired up the popcorn maker. The Cubs won 5-4 over the Padres!

They look very pretty in little vases on the window sill in the dining room. We also made chocolate chip blondies for dinner tonight. They were very good. In a little while Nathan will be here to play his banjo for us. Last time he came there was lots of laughing and dancing. We will see what happens tonight!

Today has been a busy day! We made 7 dozen chocolate chip cookies for lunch today and snacks. They turned out to be very tasty. After that a large group of children from the Christ United Methodist Church walked down to play Bingo with the residents. After lunch on Wednesday is Chapel. The residents really love singing gospel music and hearing the Bible story. Tomorrow Chaplain Duane comes to visit each resident. In the evening our neighbor, Nathan, comes down to play his banjo. He is always a big hit.

Dexter and Easy, two tiny sugar gliders were very cranky and didn't want to come out of their pouch but they sure were cute. The biggest hit with the residents was Tartan the baby Nigerian dwarf goat. We were told that one goat could feed a family of four people in Nigeria. Today Sam came and played the keyboard while he sang favorite patriotic songs. He was a hit and many residents sang along.

The residents decorated their dining room with flags, banners and table decorations for the 4th of July holiday. They also went out on the patio to watch the fireworks. Today we exercised in the morning, read "Today in History" (Did you know construction of the Hoover Dam began on this date in 1930?) then played catch with the beach ball, which is a favorite activity. It was so nice on the patio that we spent some time out there before coming inside for the Cubs vs. Reds baseball game. Everyone enjoyed fresh popcorn during the game.

We have planted our garden with tomatoes, herbs, and flowers all of which are growing nicely in spite of the heat. Jen, QMA, CNA, helps them to plant 5 beautiful planters of petunias and other plants for the patio. We spent one afternoon watching the Cubs win a baseball game. We enjoyed popcorn, chocolate and corndogs!

I hope everyone enjoyed Easter Sunday! Especially with the snow! Certainly, Mother Nature does have a sense of humor. Snow on April 1, April Fool's Day!? Welcome to Indiana. I can appreciate the humor, I guess. Over the weekend, our residents kept busy. Jen Hodge, QMA, led a tie-dye t-shirt activity on Saturday. Really, I have not ever had any design luck with the tie-dye technique. But, WOW!! You should see these tie-dye designs!!! The color choices and designs are fashionably unique! Easter cupcakes were creatively made with lots of love, too. Our residents assisted in every task, including adding coconut and green food coloring to the icing, putting the icing on and adding jelly beans to make a nest. Additionally, Jen's family joined our residents and decorated eggs & baskets. Happily, our residents filled plastic eggs with candy and hid them, too. Jen's son, age 2 1/2, hunted for the eggs, with an abundance of energy and excitement! A big THANK YOU to Jen and her family!
