That will bring you to the actual pdf and how it truly is intended. We have a lot of fun activities planned. Feel free to join us for any activities that may interest you, especially the live music! It's been so wonderful being back with my Bickford family. I missed everyone so much! I would like to say thank you all who sent cards and/or messages. It was greatly appreciated and heart warming to say the least. I probably have a few more resident family members to meet in person. I look forward to meeting you soon! In the mean time, feel free to contact me with any activity questions or suggestions at iowacitylec@enrichinghappiness.com. Your Life Enrichment Coordinator, Harmony

With the holidays approaching fast, it is important to remember these ten survival tips for families who are coping with dementia. Tip 1 - Planning can avoid holiday stress Individuals who experience the most difficulty with the holiday season are those who have given little thought to the challenges they will encounter. Consider ahead of time what may be expected of you, both socially and emotionally.  Discuss holiday celebrations with relatives and close friends in advance.  Plan to maintain a regular routine while trying to provide a pleasant, meaningful and calm holiday event.  Celebrate early in the day or have a noon meal rather than a late dinner. Tip 2 – Take care of yourself (caregiver) Remember, the holidays are opportunities to share time with people you love. Try to make these celebrations easy on yourself and with the person with Alzheimer’s disease so that you may concentrate on enjoying your time together.  Set limits by telling family and friends that you intend to control stress this holiday season.  Maintain a positive mental attitude.  Ask for assistance for you and your loved one.  Attend an Alzheimer’s Association support group that will allow you discuss ways to overcome holiday stress.  Prepare to deal with post-holiday letdown. Arrange for in-home care (respite care) so you can enjoy a movie or lunch with a friend and reduce post-holiday stress. Tip 3 – Prepare the person with Alzheimer’s for the family gathering Preparing your loved one for the upcoming holiday events can allow both of you to enjoy the warmth of the season.  Talk about and show photos of family members and friends who will be visiting.  Have a “quiet” room in case things get too hectic.  Play familiar music and serve favorite traditional holiday foods.  Schedule naps, especially if the person usually takes naps.  Schedule family and friends visit times Tip 4 – Prepare family members and friends Preparing families and friends with an honest appraisal of the person’s condition can help avoid uncomfortable or harmful situations.  Familiarize family members and friends with behaviors and condition changes.  Recommend practical and useful gifts. (See Tip 7)  Remind family and friends the best way to communicate with a person with dementia. (See Tip 6) Tip 5 – Involve everyone when selecting activities Involve everyone in holiday activities including the person with dementia.  Consider taking walks, icing cookies, telling stories, doing chores, making a memory book or family tree, or keeping a journal.  To encourage conversation, place magazines, scrapbooks, or photo albums in reach; play music to prompt dancing or other kinds of exercise.  Encourage young family members to participate in simple and familiar activities with the person. Tip 6 – Communicate with success Alzheimer’s can diminish a person’s ability to communicate. These tips may help you understand each other.  Be calm and supportive if the person has trouble communicating.  Speak slowly with a relaxed tone.  Avoid criticism. For example, when someone forgets a recent conversation, avoid saying, “Don’t you remember?”  Address the person by name.  Be patient, flexible, and do not argue with the person with Alzheimer’s Tip 7 -- Smart gift giving  Encourage family and friends to give useful, practical gifts for the person such as identification bracelet (available through Medic Alert® + Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return®). Other gifts may include comfortable easy-to-remove clothing, audiotapes of favorite music, videos, and photo albums.  Advise others not to give gifts such as dangerous tools or instruments, utensils, challenging board games, complicated electronic equipment, or pets.  If possible, involve the person in giving gifts. For example, someone who once enjoyed cooking may enjoy baking cookies, or buy the gift and allow the person to wrap it. Tip 8 – Safe environment in the home Persons with dementia may experience changes in judgment. This behavior may lead to confusion, frustration, or wandering. Consider these tips to reduce the risk of injury and situations that could be confusing to someone with dementia.  Assign a “buddy” to watch out for the person to ensure their comfort.  Arrange ample space for walking side-by-side, for wheelchairs, and walkers. Keep walking areas clear.  Consider seating options so the person with Alzheimer’s can best focus on conversation and be least distracted.  Don’t serve alcohol, which may lead to inappropriate behavior or interactions with medications.  Accommodate changes in vision. Place contrasting-color rugs in front of doors or steps. Avoid dark-colored rugs that may appear to be “holes.”  Limit access to places where injuries occur, such as a kitchen or stairwell. Check temperature of water and food.  Create even level of lighting; avoid blinking lights.  Keep decorations simple; avoid using candies, artificial fruits/vegetables, or other edibles as decorations.  Supervise in taking medicine.  Keep emergency phone numbers and a list of medications handy. Tip 9 -- Travel wisely The following suggestions may ensure a positive traveling experience:  Never leave the person alone.  Use familiar modes of transportation and avoid peak travel times.  Keep plans simple and maintain daily routines as much as possible.  Allow extra time to avoid the stress of rushing.  Advise service and hospitality staff that you are traveling with someone with dementia and about the person’s behaviors and special needs.  Arrange for services, such as wheelchairs, ahead of time.  Provide identification items such as a Medic Alert® + Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return®) bracelet and clothing labels. Tip 10 – Reliable sources of support Families can call the Alzheimer’s Association at 727-578-2558 or the 24-hour Helpline at 1-800-772-8672 to answer questions about warning signs and to assist persons with dementia and caregivers. The Helpline will be open all Christmas day and News Year day, as well as year round. Source: https://www.alz.org/flgulfcoast/alzheimers_disease_62487.asp

I love traveling to all of my branches to see what creative things they have come up with to ring in the new season. Fall is no exception, as I LOVE the pumpkins, colorful leaves and smell of spices in the air. This front porch is one example of the crisp autumn welcome you will get when dropping by.

Scholarship Recipient One of the many great opportunities Bickford provides for their Bickford Family members is the opportunity to advance their education through financial assistance. Bickford offers 2 scholarships each year. The Bickford scholarship is for current Bickford Family Members who are interested in furthering their education. The Eby Scholarship is for the children of Bickford Family Members who are pursuing higher education. I was lucky enough to not only present both scholarships to 2 very deserving students in my division, but the Eby scholarship was extra special as it went to my daughter this year! Riley is going to be a sophomore at the University of Iowa, majoring in nursing. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Sorority, and has been accepted into the honors program. Congratulations Riley! Pictured is Riley (left) receiving her scholarship certificate from Divisional Director of Resident Services for Eastern Iowa/Western Illinois, Michelle Adam.

Seeking Summer Volunteers! Do you have a passion for making a difference, perhaps the difference in someone’s life? At Bickford, our residents love people like you fluttering around, doing what you do best – whether that’s playing your guitar, giving a spinning wheel demonstration or even leading a laughing yoga class. Every unique talent you possess helps us enrich happiness in the lives of those we serve and gives you the opportunity to become a part of something bigger than yourself. You may be a volunteer to the untrained eye, but you’re an angel in our residents’ eyes when you utilize your uniqueness to transform seemingly ordinary occurrences into transcending moments. If you or someone you know are ready to don your wings, we’re calling you to be a Bickford Angel! Please comment on this post or email Harmony Hauser at iowacitylec@enrichinghappiness.com for a Volunteer Application.

You are invited to our first Walk to End Alzheimer's Fundraiser for 2017 happening tomorrow, March 24 from 3 - 7 pm in the main living area at Bickford of Iowa City! We would love to have you join us, even just for a short while, to enjoy some light refreshments and see what Scentsy has to offer. There is no pressure to buy. Who knows, you might discover something wonderful or find that perfect gift for someone else - and all for such a great cause. At least 15% of sales (possibly more!) will be donated to our Bickford Team's fundraising efforts! Pamela Miller-Dekeyser, who is our fundraiser sponsor, will have samples that you can smell and will introduce us to many of the wonderful Scentsy products. When I first discovered this line, I could not believe how many scents they had! Now I love many of their products!

Something to make your day a little brighter: At the urging of Harry’s wife and doctor, 65 year old Harry finally made it to the gym. After consulting with one of the trainers, Harry decided to try out a steep treadmill. “Ok”, said the trainer “I’m going to set it for ten minutes, if you want to go longer just press start again.” At first Harry was doing fine but after 5 seconds he started getting tired, and after a minute he jumped off gasping for breath. Walking to the side to sit down, he passed by a friend of his. “Man”, said Harry. “I could barely last a full minute on that treadmill.” “Alright alright”, said his buddy, “no reason to brag!”

Lindsey Doty who leads the University of Iowa Tau Chapter of Delta Gamma volunteers, shares her thoughts about being a Bickford Angel (also known as a volunteer). "By just one visit into Bickford, you feel as though it is a community that you can bond with the residents, that they will make you want to come back. It really is a welcoming atmosphere that will make you want to come back too. My favorite part about being a volunteer at Bickford is being around the residents. I love coming into Bickford, and having the residents recognize me and ask me how my time at Iowa is going. I also love seeing how happy they get when we do our Delta Gamma cheer right before we depart. It’s rewarding knowing that our time at Bickford is fun for both myself and the residents. Ever since I have been a Delta Gamma at the University of Iowa, volunteering at Bickford has been an opportunity for us. This is my second year of volunteering." As we get older, there is a greater risk of developing medical conditions or developing problems with memory. It is important to know what to look for and when to seek medical help. To help, here are 7 signs your parents may need help: 1. Is food in the refrigerator uneaten or outdated? Are the fridge and cabinets bare? 2. Do they look like they’ve lost a lot of unexplained weight? 3. Have they ignored their personal hygiene? 4. Are there obvious signs of unpaid bills? 5. Do they seem confused or lost in the neighborhood? 6. Are they missing medical or social appointments? 7. Do they seem abnormally disconnected or confused? These signs could be an indication that your loved one is dealing with physical limitations, memory loss and depression. If your loved one is dealing with the challenges of aging, Bickford Senior Living is here to help. Relieve some of that stress and let Bickford help you and your loved one work with their physicians to identify problems and suggest alternatives that may help lead a more active and comfortable lifestyle.
